Moving seems like an expensive life event, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Consider these factors when you are budgeting for the cost of moving to a new home.
- Compare moving company’s service offers and prices. Do your homework before choosing a
moving company and you can save hundreds of dollars on
moving services.
- Purchase your own moving boxes and supplies. You may already have packing supplies around the house or you can start saving them now.
- Pack your own household goods and you could save hours of paid labor.
- Collect any deposits made at the time of your last move from your landlord or utility company.
- Ship your car and you might save money. How much would you spend on gas, highway tolls, hotel stays and food if you drive yourself to your new location?
- Schedule the date of your move when moving companies are not as busy, for example in the middle of the week in the fall and winter months.
- Use a tax deduction if you are moving your home to start a new job, or moving because your job has moved. Contact the Internal Revenue Service for more details.
- Cancel any memberships to gyms and local associations that you will not use after you have moved to your new location.
